Making Every Visit Count: Meet CASA volunteer Kristy Ledford.

For Kristy Ledford, serving children is more than a volunteer commitment; it's a passion rooted in a lifelong love for children and a desire to make a difference. A Louisiana native, Kristy has called Houma home for more than 25 years. She spent 13 years teaching and continues to work with children through a homeschool co-op. When she isn’t working with children, she enjoys sewing, reading, crafting, and collecting Barbies. At home, she shares life with her husband, Richard “Rick” Ledford, their children, Gigi the bulldog, and Misty the cat.

Kristy’s journey with CASA began through family. After her sister introduced her to the organization, the two decided to become an advocate team. Since then, they have served on three cases involving nine children, combining their strengths to help ensure the children they serve have someone consistently looking out for their best interests.

Although life can get chaotic, Kristy makes visiting the children a priority. She admits that finding time for visits can sometimes be a challenge, but she has learned that the effort it takes to show up is often overshadowed by the rewards of being there. One of the most meaningful parts of Kristy’s CASA experience is seeing children succeed. She remains connected on Facebook with some of the parents of children she has served, and seeing their children thrive fills her heart and reminds her why she continues to advocate.

“It is worth the work,” she shared. “Kids face more than we expect, and any chance for them to enjoy life makes it worth it all.”

Sometimes, the most powerful moments are found in the simplest things. Kristy remembers playing Barbies with one of the children she served. Each time they visited, the child was ready for more playtime. The laughter and giggles they shared became priceless memories, which is a reminder that advocacy is not always about grand gestures. Sometimes, it is about creating a safe space where a child can simply be a child.

Serving alongside her sister makes the experience even more meaningful. Before court, the two often talk through their observations and compare notes. Their different perspectives help them notice details they might otherwise miss. Her sister’s talent for writing reports complements Kristy’s ability to remember the little things. Their partnership is a true give-and-take. Her sister helps keep things organized, while their shared commitment keeps them moving forward, even during busy seasons of life.

For Kristy, CASA is more than a volunteer role. It is an opportunity to walk alongside children during difficult seasons, celebrate their progress, and help ensure their voices are heard.

Her story is a reminder that advocacy does not require a perfect schedule or endless free time. It requires a willingness to make room, show up, and recognize that even the smallest moments can make a lasting difference.

Every child deserves someone in their corner and sometimes, the most meaningful change begins with a simple visit, a little playtime, and a whole lot of heart.
